GOLDSBORO - Another streak bites the dust.
Spring Creek ended a string of 28 consecutive losses in conference play with a 25-23, 17-25, 25-7, 16-25, 15-12 triumph over Neuse Six 2A rival Eastern Wayne on Thursday afternoon.
The Gators’ last league victory occurred Oct. 10, 2018 against James Kenan on the East Central 2A scene.
Eastern Wayne led 23-17 in the opening set, only to see Spring Creek storm back behind the serving of senior Yaeli Espinosa. The senior served seven aces in the Gators’ set-ending, 8-0 run.
“I told the girls you have to want to win and deserve to win, but have to finish,” said SC head coach Jannah Marriner, whose team is 1-1 in five-set matches this season.
Espinosa recorded seven aces, two kills and three digs during the county battle.
Freshman middle hitter Heather Alexander posted three aces, four kills and two solo blocks. Sophomore multi-sport athlete Emily Williams supplied one kill, three digs and four aces.
Sarah Hess contributed one kill, two solo blocks, one ace and two digs. Gabby Sutton served six aces and logged two kills.
Cailyn Shivar emerged as the defensive leader with four digs.
Spring Creek (2-8 overall, 1-1 Neuse 6) also beat a county opponent for the first time since Oct. 11, 2017 - a four-set decison over Southern Wayne.
The Gators entertain Princeton next Tuesday.
