PREP ROUNDUP: ND volleyball, SC soccer each log league win

NEWTON GROVE - Freshman Addy Higginbotham cranked out a career-high 12 kills and North Duplin halted a four-game skid with a 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17 triumph over Hobbton on the Carolina 1A volleyball scene.

Sophomore Reece Outlaw posted a double - 12 kills and 16 digs.

Kasey Jones paced the defense with 21 digs, which boosted her season total to 168. The junior libero has logged double-digit dig performances in 10 matches this season.

Morgan McCoy collected seven kills, three aces and one block.

Starr Jaco dished out 13 assists, while Logan Jones had eight assists.

North Duplin (8-8 overall, 2-8 Carolina) returns to action Monday in the season-ending conference tournament at Lakewood.

Gators in command

PRINCETON - The Spring Creek boys’ soccer team continued its unbeaten march in Neuse Six 2A Conference action with a 2-0 shutout over Princeton on Thursday evening.

Jossue Pineda Hernandez and Jason Velasquez recorded one goal apiece for the Gators.

Oswaldo Escudero had one assist.

Goalie Joseph Vasquez logged one save between the pipes. Spring Creek has filed six clean sheets (shutouts) this season, including five in conference play.

The Gators (10-2-1 overall, 8-0-0 Neuse Six) entertain Goldsboro next Tuesday. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

CBA sweeps Saints

DUDLEY - Southern Wayne ended regular-season play with an 8-25, 20-25, 20-25 loss to Quad County 3A volleyball rival Charles B. Aycock on Thursday afternoon.

“I am immensely proud of how hard my girls worked tonight and how they stayed focused despite the circumstances,” SW head coach Jamie Williams said. “The way that my girls continue to show class is more important to me than the win-loss record. They should hold their heads high for the effort and heart they had out there tonight. 

“I am one proud coach.”

Senior Katie Toler registered six digs and six blocks. Anna Summerlin provided five kills and five digs.

Taylor Lee dished out 16 assists.

Allie Lane logged 22 digs.

Southern Wayne (4-14 overall, 3-11 QCC) returns to action Monday in the season-ending conference tournament.
