GREENVILLE - Southern Wayne launched its 2021 spring football campaign with a 28-0 loss at Eastern Carolina 3A-4A Conference foe D.H. Conley.
“For this to have been the first game with only two weeks to prepare against this caliber of a team who's had time since June, we saw a lot of bright spots,” said Southern Wayne head coach Ronnie McClary Jr. “Our defense played great. Our offense was able to move the ball but just couldn't get in the end zone. We had about three or four fumbles, and just couldn't sustain drives.
“We'll take this and use it as a teaching lesson, but to see the competitiveness from these guys was really something that we can and will build off of.”
Senior quarterback Paul Francis completed five passes - two each to Darius Jackson (28 yards) and Tayvon Callahan (16), and one to Wadshon Pierre-Louis (11).
Jerome Moore paced the ground attack with 32 yards on 12 totes.
The Saints return home Friday to face county and ECC rival Charles B. Aycock. The Golden Falcons (0-1 overall, 0-1 ECC) lost starting quarterback Clay Matthews to season-ending, MCL tear in his left knee.
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.
