A total of 96 teams battled in eight flights during the annual Southern Wayne Country Club Handy Mart Tournament contested this past weekend.
The tandem of Judson Pope-Tony Herring posted a second-day 55 to emerge victorious in the Championship Flight with a 36-hole score of 115. They entered the final round in an eight-way tie for second place behind first-day leaders David Combs-Steve Oliver, who shot a 58.
Combs-Oliver ended up with a 122.
Pope and Herring each received a crystal vase for their efforts on the well-manicured, par-71 course. The duo split a $450 payout.
The father-son duo of Stan and Nick Adams won a scorecard playoff against Chuck Kimble-Will Caughron to take first-flight honors. The Adamses trailed Kimble-Caughron by two strokes after Saturday’s round.
Johnny Milkovits and Eddie Faucette claimed the second flight with a two-day mark of 127. Three twosomes tied for second place at 128, including the father-son duo of Ken Avent Jr. and Ken Avent III.
Third flight belonged to Frankie Watson and Keith Smith, who recorded a second-day 62 and won with a 36-hole effort of 129. Steve Regner and Eric King finished three strokes back in second place.
Curt Douglas-Bobby Smith won the fourth flight with a 133. Four strokes separated the top four teams.
Kenney Moore, a former Club Champion at Southern Wayne, and his playing partner Billy Godwin secured the top spot in fifth-flight competition with a 135. Brandon Bass and Adam Montague seized second overall with a 138.
Mike and Kris Denning earned the top spot in the sixth flight with a two-day performance of 140. Greg Breeze-Rocky McAlduff took second at 141.
Mathew Hart and Benny Murphy grabbed the seventh flight with a 153. Blake and Brian Saunders captured second with a 156.
Prizes were split among 76 competitors on the day.
Southern Wayne CC will play host to the Pickle Classic on Aug. 14-16 and the Michael Martin Memorial on Aug. 20.
