Mount Olive Police have arrested a drive-by shooting suspect. 23-year-old Jeffrey Rishawn Leach, Jr., of 121 Pineforest Road is being held under an $800,000 bond at the Wayne County Jail in two felonious assault charges. Leach is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill resulting in serious injury.
He is accused in the late afternoon July 26 shooting of 25-year-old Brandon Durham of 492 Kelly Springs Road. Durham was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred at 230 Franklin Street.
Police said the victim called police after being struck in the back and the lower part of his stomach while he was standing on the front porch at the residence. Investigators said Leach told them he did not know who shot him and that it happened when a silver car drove by.
Police said the uncovered seven casing from a nine mm weapon. Police Chief Tommy Brown said other charges could be filed against Leach. He also told the Tribune several of the recent shootings may have been connected.
Town manager Charles Brown complimented police for their investigative work that led to the arrest. Mayor Joe Scott said police worked “tirelessly and nearly around the clock on the case.”
It was the fifth shooting in Mount Olive in a month.
