To the editor:
It’s disappointing that the mayor of Mount Olive chooses to support an industry that is a major air polluter in our area. Joe Scott spoke in favor of the expansion of Sampson Enviva (the pellet plant located outside Faison near I-40 exit 355) at a public hearing before the Division of Air Quality in Clinton on July 15.
Sampson Enviva has a Title V air permit and according to Division of Air Quality records, emitted over 2 million pounds of pollutants (including tons of hazardous air pollutants) in 2017, alone, and has violated its air permit.
It’s unfortunate that Mayor Scott, who’s worked so hard to move Mount Olive in a positive direction, is in favor of expanding a polluting industry that affects the very air that we breathe, and thereby affects our health and well-being in such a negative way.
