Plans are on schedule to open the new multi-million dollar regional Steele Memorial Library at the end of July, but plans on what to do with the old library facility a block away are still up in the air.
The old library at the corner of James and Chestnut Streets is a town-owned facility.
The most sensible option on what to do with the closing library is to sell it, said town manager Charles Brown.
However, he notes it is a decision that is up to the town’s board of commissioners.
Brown said there has been interest in purchasing the old library facility and also interest in leasing it.
“I am not sure what the thinking of the board is about this issue, but it is something that will most likely be discussed at the upcoming meeting in July,” said the town manager.
He did say he has discussed the issue with several people interested in the old library facility, but nothing solid has come up.
He said it has little facility value to the town for housing any municipal operations.
“I think the ideal situation is to sell it,” he said.
Brown said the building is on the county tax books with a value of $76,000.
Friends of the Library spokesperson Lynn Williams said a specific date for an official opening of the library has not been decided at this time, but it will be sometime during the last two weeks of July.
