Alice Evans
Alice Talmadge Malpass Evans, 83, of Dudley, died Saturday, November 29 at Britthaven Nursing Home.
Funeral services were Wednesday, December 3 at 1 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Horace Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park.
Alice was born in Wayne County on July 17, 1925, to the late Edgar Malpass, and Bessie and Kirby Hamm. She was married for 58 years to the late A.J. Evans. Alice was a former member of Oak Heights Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church
Alice is survived by her sons, Ray A. Evans and wife, Gloria of Goldsboro and David A. Evans and Louise Holland of Dudley; her daughters, Linda Robinson and husband, George of Houston, Texas, Faye Merlin and husband, Al of Dudley and Ann Pospichel of Mount Olive; her sister, Edna McKeel of Goldsboro; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sons, Cecil Evans and Ricky Evans; and her sisters, Louise Parrish Evans and Margaret Kleinert.

Manetta Brown
Manetta Brown, 60 of Bowie, Md., formerly of Wilson, died Saturday, November 22 in Wilson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 29 at 1 p.m. at L. N. Forbes Original Free Will Baptist Tabernacle with the Elder George E. Wiggins officiating. Interment was in the Rest Haven Cemetery.
She is survived by one son, Dalreese Brown of the home; two daughters, Shalice Brown and Shavon Brown both of Landover, Md.; her mother, Wilhelmina Edwards of Bowie, Md.; three brothers, James Taylor of Dudley; Willard D. Brown, and Cyril Brown Sr. both of Snow Hill; one sister, Norma Brown Guest of Snow Hill; and two aunts, Mildred Pigford of Elizabith, N.J. and Clara Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Minnie Ruth Gurley
Minnie Ruth Gurley, 87, of Goldsboro, died Friday, November 28.
Funeral services were Sunday, November 30 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with her son, Arthur Gurley officiating. Interment followed at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mrs. Gurley was born on December 17, 1920 in Wayne County to the late William Ingram and Rosal Overman Ingram. She was a member of Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Gurley was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Robert Gurley, three sons, Robert Gurley, Edward Gurley and Richard Ervin Gurley; two grandchildren, Shantone Rene and Marlon Darden; one great-grandson, Kade Bumpous; three brothers, James Ingram, Chester “Babe” Ingram and Tom Ingram; and one sister, Lula Evans.
She is survived by five sons, Roy and Barbara Gurley of Pikeville, Shade and Judy Gurley of Charles City, Va., Raeford and Helen Gurley of Pikeville, Jimmy and Kathy Gurley of the home, and Arthur and Susan Gurley of Goldsboro; three daughters, Maggie and Devid Smith of Goldsboro, Rachel and Lynwood Litton of Mount Olive and Lelanette “Lynn” and Linnie Glance of Goldsboro; and a sister, Julia and Malcom Gurley of Goldsboro. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren including Paul and Lester Meyers; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Bobby Harrell
Bobby Earl Harrell, 75, of Pink Hill, died Friday, November 28 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
The funeral service was held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 30 at Pink Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Kopanski officiating. Burial was 11 a.m. Monday, December. 1 at Edwards Family Cemetery, Pink Hill.
Mr. Harrell was a disabled veteran after serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired Free Will Baptist minister.
Mr. Harrell is survived by his wife, Dolly W. Harrell of the home; a daughter, Tamara H. Howard and husband, Glenn, of Snow Hill; a son, John G. Harrell of Seven Springs; brothers, Jimmy “Doc” Harrell of Wilson, and J.E. Harrell of Morehead City; grandchildren, Heather Wade of LaGrange, and Skyler Creech of Snow Hill; step-daughter, Annette Hardison and husband, Gary, of Richlands; stepson, Joe White and wife, Becky, of Kinston; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Margie Marie Howell
“Mother” Margie Marie Howell, 63, of Fremont, died Thursday, November 27 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, November 30, at noon at the New Daniel Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, Fremont. Burial followed at Fremont Cemetery.
Margie was born April 17, 1945, in Wayne County to the late Milford and Cora Wells Howell.
She is survived by six children and children-in-law, Thomas and Gloria Howell of Dudley, Robin V. Howell of Leesburg, Va., Jessica Parker of Goldsboro, Michelle Howell of Greensboro, Beverly Howell of the home, and Michael and Tasha Howell of Greensboro; five sisters- and brothers-in-law, Doris and Johnny Smith, Frances and Leroy Ruffin, both of Fremont, Shirley and Donnell Best of Landover, Md., Letha Faye and Stewart Ralph of Charlotte, and Dianne H. and Wallace Spellman of Pikeville; 10 brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lorraine Wells, Bobby and Elizabeth Howell, and Johnnie Howell, all of Fremont, Raymond and Francine Howell, Larry and Claudette Howell of Wilson, Earvin and Carolyn Howell, “Jimmy” and Sheryl Howell, and David Howell, all of Fremont, and Robert and Carolyn Howell of Goldsboro; sister-in-law, Shirley Howell; and three grandchildren
Mrs. Howell is preceded in death by a brother, Paul Howell.

Joseph C. Melton
Joseph Carlton “Buddy” Melton, 53, of the Scott’s Store community, died Sunday morning, November 23, at his home.
He was born Jan. 12, 1955.
The funeral was held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26 at Tyndall Funeral Home, with burial following in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery, Warsaw.
Mr. Melton is survived by his wife, Kim L. Melton; a son, Adam Lee Melton of South Carolina; five daughters, Tammy Renee Melton of Mount Olive, Ashley Nicole Edmundson of Fayetteville, Stephanie Ann Page Edmundson and Tiffany Dawn Bernal, both of Mount Olive, Christine Rose Edmundson of Fayetteville; three sisters: Barbara and Martha Kay, both of Asheville and Brenda of Jacksonville; and 10 grandchildren.
His parents, Carlton and Carrie Nolan Melton; and a sister, Linda Cruse Field, preceded him in death.
Donations to the funeral home will be appreciated by the family.
Wade S. Sasser Jr.
Wade Steele Sasser Jr., 47, of Mount Olive, died Sunday evening, November 23 at his home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 28 at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Leland Heath and the Rev. Frank Harrison officiating. Interment was in Wayne Memorial Park with Masonic rites.
Born May 12, 1961, Steele grew up in the Smith’s Chapel community. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive and the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge 208 A.F. and A.M. He was employed in the music department at Wayne Community College and had been a former teacher at Southern Wayne High School where he directed “Saint Sound.”
He was preceded in death by his father, Wade S. Sasser Sr.
Steele is survived by his sons, Wade S. Sasser III of Raleigh and Hunter Sasser of Mount Olive; his mother, Wilma Dean Bradshaw Sasser of Mount Olive; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. James Mark Sasser and Debbie Sasser of Mount Olive; a nephew, Connor Sasser, and a niece, Natalie Ecker, both of Mount Olive.

Lela M. Spruill
Mrs. Lela Mae Spruill, 83, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday, November 18 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, November 29 at 11 a.m. at White Oak Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church in Pikeville with Minister Keith E. Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery. 
Mrs. Lela Mae was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Wayne County to the late Lamm Brown and Carrie Hamm Lamm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Spruill; her sons, Carlton Spruill, Wilbert Hamm, and Joseph Spruill; and her grandson, Petrosky Faison.
She is survived by her children, Michael J. Spruill of Goldsboro, Judith Baker and husband, James Sterlin of Pikeville, Edith S. Powell and Carrie S. Faison both of Goldsboro; six grandchildren; Shannon Pierre Baker and wife, Denise of Pikeville, Shauna Baker of Ben Brook, Texas, Marcus Barker of Pikeville, Vander Valechi Spruill of Baltimore, Md., T-Lee R. Williams of Goldsboro and Wilbert Clarke of Mount Olive; six great-grandchildren, Maurriell Baker, Shamar Baker, Shannon Baker, Devajhea Applewhite, Jaalin Applewhite, Jahiem Williams; and two sisters, Esther H. Smith and Virgina B. Coley.

Carol F. Gibson
Miss Carol Frances Gibson, 61, of Goldsboro died Tuesday, November 25, 2008.
Born in Scotland County on January 16, 1947, she was the only daughter of the late Lauder and Lucy Freeman Gibson. She was a long-time resident of the O’Berry Center in Goldsboro.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, at Hillside Cemetery in her native Laurinburg, and was officiated by the Rev. Jim Morgan.
She is survived by several cousins; her guardian, Brenda P. Davis of Mount Olive; and by the O’Berry residents and staff.
Arrangements handled by McDougald Funeral Home of Laurinburg. Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive handled the local arrangements.
Carole Register
Carole Marie Adams Register, 68, of Goldsboro, died early Tuesday morning, November 25, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, November 26 at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. Dr. A.O. Vannorsdall officiating.
Born in Birmingham, Ala. on February 28, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Louise Jenkins Adams; and wife of the late Cecil Keith Register.
Mrs. Register is survived by three daughters, Marie Wells of Rose Hill, Donna Register of Dudley and Leah Friedman of Durham; four grandchildren, Michael Wells, Eugene Wells, Norman Sites, and Dixie Reardon; and four great-grandchildren.
