Duplin Co., Calypso want to see Kornegay honored again
By John Cate, editor
4 December 2008 – If the N.C. Department of Transportation approves it sometime next year, one of the area’s most prominent citizens will reap yet another honor.
During their monthly meetings on Monday, both the Duplin County and Town of Calypso boards of commissioners unanimously approved a resolution suggested by friends and family of Dr. Hervy Kornegay. The resolution expressed support for renaming the U.S. Highway 117 bridge in Calypso in honor of Dr. Kornegay.
Kornegay, the medical director for the Duplin County Health Department, has served the communities of southern Wayne and northern Duplin counties for more than 45 years, in numerous capacities. He was the North Carolina Family Physician of the Year in 1998. A native of Calypso, he still works part-time at Mount Olive Family Medicine Center.
Last month, he was inducted into the Duplin County Hall of Fame.
The resolution was first presented by Dr. Kornegay’s wife Deborah during the county board’s meeting Monday morning in Kenansville. The resolution passed almost without debate, with Commissioner David Fussell making the motion to approve and subsequently joking with Dr. Kornegay about the proposal—which had been conceived as a surprise to him. It passed unanimously and Dr. Kornegay thanked the board for supporting the honor.
At the Calypso board meeting that evening, there was some reluctance to pass the resolution due to the absence of Mayor Dick Lewis, who was unable to attend. However, Town Clerk Loretta Lanier had spoken to Lewis earlier in the day and assured the board that Mayor Lewis indeed supported the proposal. The board was also informed by a member of the press that the resolution had been approved that morning by Duplin County. A vote was called for soon afterward, with everyone in attendance voting to adopt.
With both the county and Dr. Kornegay’s hometown board having signed off on the proposal, it will now be up to the county and town to request that the NCDOT approve the naming of the bridge in his honor. Such requests are generally approved by the state, but take some time for consideration and approval.
