6 November 2008 – Congregations representing the Free Will Baptist churches of Wayne County recently generated $88,070 in gifts to Mount Olive College, the denomination’s private, Christian liberal arts institution.
A total of 275 people attended the Annual College Dinner at Mount Olive College last week. Churches presented their gifts to the College at the dinner. Of those giving, 207 were designated as Bridge Builders for contributing a gift of $100 or more.
The Convention of Original Free Will Baptists established Mount Olive College in 1951 as one of its ministries and has given strong support throughout its 57-year history.
Ms. Barbara Lancaster of Mount Olive, The Reverend Frank Harrison of Mount Olive, Mrs. Agnes Corbitt of Pikeville, Mrs. Georgia Cuddington of Fremont and The Reverend Jeff Daughtry of La Grange formed the steering committee for the dinner.
Two churches received special recognition at the dinner. Stoney Creek FWB Church was recognized for giving the largest contribution. May’s Chapel FWB Church was recognized for giving the most per capita and for having the most high school students at the dinner.
Jean F. Ackiss, director of church support, coordinated the event and presided over the program. “Every time you give to Mount Olive College, you are making an investment in the lives of the students we serve,” she said.
“Free Will Baptists are helping to make a difference in the lives of more than 5,000 students at Mount Olive College this year,” said Dr. J. William Byrd, president of MOC. “Through the years, MOC has transformed itself in many ways, one thing that has never changed, and never will, is the College’s commitment to helping students transform themselves, and achieve goals that might have seemed unreachable. Mount Olive College provides students a foundation for learning and for living.”
