Warsaw VFW offering scholarships, savings bonds to worthy local students
30 October 2008 – Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9810 of Warsaw and its Ladies Auxiliary offers annual scholarship programs for students in our local school district. These programs have been in existence for many years and give our youth an opportunity to express their feelings about a patriotic theme through a recorded tape or written essay.
Our premier program is called the “Voice of Democracy” (VOD) scholarship program and is available to all eligible high school students. Foreign exchange students, students age 20 or older and previous VOD first place state winners are ineligible.
Interested students need only write and then record a three to five minute audio/essay on high quality tape while expressing their view of this year’s patriotic theme, “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today’s Youth by….” Students are judged on originality, content, and delivery. All state winners receive at least a $1,000 National Scholarship, but could win the $30,000 first place award at the national level.
The other program for the younger students in grades, 6th, 7th, and 8th is called “Patriot’s Pen.” For this program students are required to submit a 300-400 word typewritten essay, written by the student, on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW’s Commander-in-Chief each year. This year’s theme is “Why America’s Veterans Should be Honored.” Students are judged on the knowledge of theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas. Winners will receive a savings bond of varying denomination at the local, district, state, and national levels of competition. The Warsaw Post 9810 (local level) winner will receive a $50 savings bond, whereas the national winner will receive a $10,000 savings bond.
The deadline for both VOD and Patriot’s Pen local entries is midnight November 1, 2008. Their tape and written essay must be turned into the Post VOD Chairman, David Benton at 1053 NC 11-903 N, Kenansville, NC 28349.
Students may visit the VFW web site at www.vfw.org for further information and to get an official entry form. If you do not have Internet access, please feel free to contact Mr. Benton at 910-296-1885 and he can provide you the necessary entry forms to fill out and return with your entry tape or essay.
Please help promote the patriotic spirit that the town of Warsaw is well known for by giving your support to students who wish to enter these worthwhile programs. Warsaw VFW Post Commander David Benton is quoted by saying, “Young people who participate in the competition benefit by gaining a better understanding of their country, their freedoms, and their obligations to America.”
