Albertson to receive new well
14 August 2008 –By John Cate, editor
The Albertson community will soon be receiving an additional water well, thanks to a $500,000 state grant and the acquiescence of the Duplin County Board of Commissioners during their Aug. 4 monthly meeting.
Taking a break from the meeting to convene as the Duplin County Water District A board during the middle of the public session, the board was informed that a half-million dollar grant from the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center had been approved. The additional water supply is needed for the community due to the fact that one of the supply wells that support Albertson is out of commission. Water district officials described the new well as being of “utmost importance.”
The grant requires a $500,000 matching contribution from Duplin County, and the county must reconfirm its current water rates with the NCREDC. The state requires that the rates be at a certain level so that the maintenance of any new, grant-funded construction can be paid for locally. Also, the county must being constructing the new well by June.
Because the District A rates are above the state minimum, only a recertification is needed; there will be no increase in rates. Before construction commences, the county will have to purchase land to install the new well. Duplin County will begin seeking land to purchase for the new site.
The board passed the budget amendment for the matching funds unanimously.
