MOC faculty, students join together to clean up park
14 August 2008 –By William Holloman, staff writer
Two Mount Olive College administrators have organized a large number of student volunteers who will join others in a major cleanup and repair work project at both Westbrook and Nelson Street Parks.
The afternoon of work is set for August 18, and the two parks will be closed from noon until the work day has concluded.
Mount Olive town manager Charles Brown said the work effort has been organized by MOC’s Julie Beck and Rhonda Bryant.
Some 200 students have volunteered, Brown said.
The town will also have some employees on hand and will supply supplies and other materials for the work effort.
The volunteers will be broken into groups and the largest group will be assigned to the Westbrook Park duties since it is the larger of the two public parks.
Much of the work at Westbrook will involve applying sealant to the wide variety of playground equipment in Kids World.
The same effort was done last year, but this marks the first time MOC has joined with the effort with so many volunteers.
Brown said it is merely another effort of the fine community citizen the college is.
“This means a lot to me and is another great example of how important the college is to Mount Olive,” said the town manager.
He also praised the efforts of Ms. Beck and Ms. Bryant.
Others who would like to volunteer may do so by being at the parks at noon or signing up on a volunteer sheet at town hall in the manager’s office complex.
Further information on the project may be obtained by calling town hall at 919-658-9539, extension 106.
