130 MPH chase ends in arrest
10 July 2008–By William Holloman, staff writer
A Maryland man visiting his cousin led Mount Olive Police on a high speed chase that ran slightly more than 11 miles with speeds of nearly 130 miles per hour.
There were no injuries, but officers said one innocent motorist was nearly “rear-ended” during the chase.
When the rubber stopped burning during the early morning, June 29 chase, officers jailed 38-year-old Jeffrey Lavarne Blount of Brandywine, Md.
His bond was set at $75,000 on a wide variety of violations. No court date was included in the report.
Blount was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, three counts of misdemeanor speeding, one count of careless and reckless driving, and a stop sign violation.
Officers said the chase finally ended at a Rollingwood Estates address in Dudley. When they saw Blount, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol.
However, Blount refused a sobriety test on at least six attempts. Blood samples were taken by emergency personnel.
Officer Jason Holliday said the chase began at 1:52 in the early morning on North Breazeale Avenue.
Holliday said the car driven by Blount, a 2008 Chevy Malibu rental car, zoomed by him at about 70 miles per hour as he was parked in the parking lot of a closed business.
The chase started when Holliday said he reached speeds of 80 miles per hour before he turned on his blue lights.
As both cars sped out of town, heading north on U.S. Highway 117-South Alternate.
Officer Holliday said as Blount’s vehicle approached Southern Wayne High School, speeds up to 128 miles per hour had been reached.
Officer said Blount turned on his signal lights as if he were going to turn right at SWHS, but kept going north.
A vehicle near the intersection of 117 and Sleepy Creek Road was nearly rear-ended, the officer reported.
The fleeing vehicle proceeded north and turned right at Outlaw Road, ran the traffic sign at the Old Mount Olive Highway, turned left and then continued speeds up to 80 miles per hour through Rollingwood subdivision.
Officer Holliday said Blount pulled the car into 535 Rollingwood Estates and then got out of the vehicle.
Officer Holliday and Officer Ben Loch said they pulled out their service weapons, and finally got Blount handcuffed.
He told officers his cousin lived at the address.
In other police activity, officers arrested 26-year-old Brandon Teachey of 305 West Kornegay Street.
He was charged with an attempted break in at the 215 West Main Street home of Donna Byrd.
Bond for Teachey was set at $500 and he faces the charge in Wayne District Court on August 15.
Ms. Byrd told police she said she heard someone open her glass door and then attempt to open the wooden door at her home.
She said when she opened the door Teachey was standing there and told her he did not want any trouble.
Police quoted the woman as saying, “Well, you have got some trouble.”
He was arrested by Police Chief Ralph Schroeder a short time after the incident at College Plaza Shopping Center.
Charges alleging two counts of resisting arrest, trespassing, and possession of drug paraphernalia were lodged by police against 31-yuear-old LaToya Robinson, 754 Indian Springs Road.
Her court date was set for September 5. She was jailed in lieu of a $2,000.
The arrest was the result of a trespassing complaint at a Handy Mart Store on North Breazeale Avenue.
