Calypso gets $200K in rural development grants

10 July 2008–By Barry Merrill, publisher

The Town of Calypso has been awarded over $200,000 in Rural Development grants recently, in addition to the $63,000 the town received a few months ago.

Commissioner Larry Cashwell announced at Monday’s Town Board meeting that the town had received a $143,000 grant for water system improvements from the NC Rural Center. The town will be required to come up with $50,000 in matching money to use this grant.

He also announced that the town had been awarded a $112,000 loan/grant package for the town equipment building from the USDA Rural Development. $62,000 will come to the town as a grant, but $50,000 will be in the form of a low interest loan that the town will have to repay. Mr. Cashwell is investigating the possibility of using that loan for the matching money for the water system grant.

He also announced that work had been completed on the roof of the water treatment plant building, but that there needed to be some painting to finish it up.

The retention basin at the water plant has been cleaned out. There were some cracks noted.

He also said he has been in contact with Utility Services about doing maintenance on the town’s water tanks.
