Mount Olive to hire full-time rec director
26 June 2008 – By William Holloman, staff writer
Mount Olive plans to employ a fulltime director of recreation and set up an active recreation advisory commission.
It is a plan that has been on the table for a number of years, and an issue always at the top of priorities when citizen input is sought to determine town needs.
The next Town operating budget includes an approximate $40,000 for salary and benefits.
Town Manager Charles Brown said a job description is currently being put together.
He said once that is complete the position will be advertised.
Currently, officials are also in contact with a number of citizens who could or would serve on an advisory commission.
Brown said he wants to make it clear that current director Tom Swinson, who is employed on a part time basis, has done an outstanding job.
Swinson has been the part time director since 2002.
“In the years since he began,” Brown said, “he has built the program to the point that it is difficult to manage with the limited hours he can work.”
He went on to say, “We now need to consider adding someone to the department as a full time director who can work along side Tom and Jimmy Adams to continue to build on the current success of the program.”
The Town Manager said a top priority is to continue working toward expanding the town’s parks and recreation programs.
“A recent survey done by the town indicated that recreational programs are a high priority with those surveyed and fortunately the town is now in a position to consider adding a full time director,” Brown said.
The Town Manager said recreation in the Town of Mount Olive has always been handled by highly dedicated people and on a part time basis.
But, those days are about over.
“The needs of the town have grown to the point that it is more and more difficult to handle it that way,” said the Town Manager.
“Right now we are in the process of coming up with a job description and setting up a recreation commission. We really want to get some input from citizens,” the Town Manager added.
He also said recreation officials at Mount Olive College have offered to help with setting up the new program.
He said Swinson and Adams will remain on a part time basis to assist the new director.
“We feel like this is important, because when we do surveys and talk to people who may considering locating in Mount Olive recreation is always one of their biggest concerns,” he noted.
Brown recalled a survey done two years ago that revealed the lack of recreational programs to be one of the town’s biggest weaknesses.
He said what is going on with the new idea is a move to “correct that weakness.”
The position actually becomes effective with the new fiscal year budget that begins on July 1.
Brown said he hopes to have the job description completed prior to that so the position can be advertised as quickly as possible.
“We want a program that will be good for the people of Mount Olive,” Brown concluded.
