Parks tops Dixon in Duplin Co. runoff, will run unopposed for Commissioner
26 June 2008 – By William Holloman, staff writer
The only thing that was sure in the District 1 county commissioner runoff on Tuesday between political newcomers Frances Parks and Jimmy Dixon was that the district would wind up with a new commissioner for the seat.
Two-term Commissioner L.S. Guy did not seek re-election this year.
Ms. Parks and Mr. Dixon went head to toe in a four-way Democratic primary back in May.
Ms. Parks came on out top, but the margin was not enough for a victory.
The margin then was 47 votes, 775 for Ms. Parks and 728 for Mr. Dixon.
Dixon asked for the runoff.
He came up short a second time--by a larger margin in round two.
Ms. Parks pulled in 730 votes on Tuesday to his 667.
But, Dixon shook the winner’s hand, congratulated her, and wished her success in her first political venture.
Mr. Dixon said it has not crossed his mind at this time whether he will consider being a candidate again or not.
Ms. Parks said she is thankful for the support she got and wants now to settle down and begin getting the job done that is being entrusted to her.
All the votes are still unofficial until the official canvassing scheduled for 11 a.m. on July l at the Duplin County Board of Elections here.
Ms. Parks told the Tribune she looks forward to serving the people of Duplin County and will do her job with honor and enthusiasm.
She said her win came as the result of a lot of hard work from a lot of people.
Her margin of victory came with decisive wins in both Calypso and Faison.
She pulled down 219 in Calypso to Dixon’s 27.
In Faison, Ms. Parks had 218 votes to Dixon’s 34.
Ms. Parks faces no Republican opposition on the November ballot.
New commissioners take office the first meeting in December.
Ms. Parks will join veteran District Five Commissioner Zettie Williams of Magnolia as the second woman on the board.
A longtime political observer said it is the first time as far as he knows that two women have served at the same time on the commission.
