Fred Adams, Jr.
Frederick “Fred” Adams, Jr., 75, of 691 Country Club Road, Mount Olive, died Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2008, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
He was retired from Franklin Baking Co. with 32 years of service, had been a farmer, and attended the Mount Olive Presbyterian Church. He is fondly remembered by his family as being a wonderful husband, father, and PaPa. An avid Carolina Tar Heel fan and an Atlanta Braves fan, he and his wife were avid ballroom dancers and a highlight of their dancing memories was the privilege of having danced for a former governor,
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Wicks officiating. Interment followed in Wayne Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Waters Adams of the home; five children and their spouses, Phyllis and Joe Aiton of Goldsboro, Freddie and Betsy Adams of Wilmington, Jimmy and Anita Martin of Goldsboro, Sharon and Kirk Nethercutt of Pikeville, and Susan and Van Alphin of Mount Olive; twelve grandchildren, Casey and J.T. Cape, Kyle Aiton, Ross Adams, Rylie Adams, Andrew Martin, Jenna Martin, Cameron Martin, Adam Nethercutt, Eden Nethercutt, Cassie Alphin, Kristin Alphin, and Calvin Alphin; and a brother, Jimmy E. Adams of Mount Olive. Also, an aunt, Gladys Jackson of Goldsboro, and a cousin, Billy Jackson and wife, LaRose, of Grantham, survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred L. and Elizabeth Raynor Adams, and a sister, Joyce A. Bradley.
The family received friends at the funeral home on Friday, June 20, from 6 until 8 p.m., and at the residence at other times.

Kathleen S. Barwick
Kathleen Smith Barwick, 82, of 1664 Pineview Cemetery Road, died Tuesday morning, June 17 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18 at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Garrett officiating. The burial was at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 19 at Pineview Cemetery. Friends and relatives were received at the funeral home immediately following the service, and at other times at the home of John H. Barwick, Jr., 1660 Pineview Cemetery Road, Seven Springs.
She was a retired farm-wife and homemaker, and had cared for many children in years past. She was a member of Seven Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Barwick; her parents, Bartemus and Katie Belle Dixon Smith; a daughter, Roseleen Brown Nethkin, and Roseleen’s first husband, Jimmy Brown. She is survived by a daughter, Doris Evans of Goldsboro; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Joyce Mozingo of Goldsboro, Lewis and Joyce Barwick of Kinston, and John Henry, Jr. and Nan Barwick of Seven Springs; a son-in-law, Robert Nethkin of Seven Springs; two sisters, Louise Daly Shepherd of Goldsboro, and Josephine Holland of Seven Springs; four brothers, Clarence Smith of Goldsboro, Relma M. “Smitty” Smith of Mount Olive, William E. Smith of Virginia Beach, Va., and Eugene C. Smith of Seven Springs; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Alex David Hopkins
Alex David Hopkins, 8, went to be with Jesus Thursday, June 12, 2008, at the Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
The funeral was at 4 p.m., Monday, June 16, 2008, at Carolinas Cornerstone Baptist Church in Fort Mill, S.C. with the Revs. Barry Yates and Jim Parrish officiating. Burial followed at Unity Cemetery.
Born in Rock Hill, S.C., Alex was the son of Jonathan David Hopkins and Crystal Wilson Hopkins. Alex enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming and vacationing with his family. He also enjoyed gardening, especially planting flowers. He was an avid Carolinas Panther fan.
Surviving are his parents, Jonathan and Crystal Hopkins; his sister, Zoe Lynn Hopkins; his paternal grandparents, Dave and Libby Hopkins of Fort Mill; maternal grandparents, Billy and Diane Wilson of Fort Mill; paternal great-grandparents, Will and Joyce Hopkins of Mount Airy, Md., and Virgil and Sarah Tyner of Mount Olive, maternal great-grandmother, Mamie Wilson of Fort Mill; uncles and aunts, Jonathan and Gina Kidd and Rob and Rachel Ryan, all of Fort Mill, and Daved and Anita Welborn and Tracie Ramsey, all of Rock Hill; and cousins, Makenzie and Gavin Welborn and Gracyn Kidd.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Carolinas Cornerstone Baptist Church, and other times at the home.

Luvenia M. Bryant
Luvenia M. Bryant, 77, of Mount Olive, died Sunday, June 8 at SunBridge Nursing Center.
Born October 1, 1930, she was the daughter of late Letha Legget and James Merrick.
The funeral was held Sunday, June 15 at 4 p.m. at the Evangelical Fellowship Center with Dr. Curtis Lee officiating. Burial followed in the Carver Cemetery.
She is survived by five children.
Darlene B. Grantham
Darlene Brock Grantham, 56, of Mount Olive, died Monday morning, June 16, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at Tyndall Funeral Home, with Pastor Bob Goodman officiating. The burial service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 at Wayne Memorial Park.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Garry L. Grantham of the home; her parents, Jasper and Nedje S. Brock of Mount Olive; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Regina Grantham of Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Craig Davis of Dudley; two grandchildren, Nathan Grantham and Eva Kate Davis; a brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Susan Brock of Goldsboro; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Melba Brock of Mount Olive, and Janet and Charley Pippin of LaGrange; and her parents-in-law, Lee and Jewel Grantham of Goldsboro.

Willie R. Newkirk
Willie Ray Newkirk, 53, of Goldsboro, died Friday, June 13 at his home.
Mr. Newkirk was born on December 27, 1954, to the late Lenora Jane Gillespie and James William Newkirk.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18 at 11 a.m. at Bible Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 1807 S. Slocumb St. Pastor Jimmy Mumford officiated. Burial followed at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Kinston.
Ray graduated from Southern Wayne High School. After high school, he entered the United States Army. After completing his military service, he began working at Cooper Standard Automotive. Ray was an employee of Cooper Standard for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Newkirk; three children, Letitia (Corey) Parker of Raleigh, Crystal Nicole Best of Snow Hill, and Raven Nicole Newkirk of Mount Olive; one sister, Edna Harper of Faison; three brothers, James Earl Newkirk of Georgia, Allan (Andra) Newkirk of Mount Olive, and Morris Newkirk of Mount Olive; one aunt, Juanita Robertson of Virginia; three grandchildren, Alexia Best, Marissa Best and Sierra Johnson; a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Kaye V. Gray
Kaye Vinson Gray, 57, of LaGrange, died Monday, June 9.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. from Tanglewood Church with Pastor Tim Lanier, Pastor Anthony Braswell and the Rev. Allen Ham officiating. Graveside committal services were held Thursday at 10 a.m. from Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange.
Kaye was born in LaGrange on May 1, 1951, to the late Milford and Carrie Vinson.
She was an active member of Tanglewood Church in Kinston, Tanglewood Church Cancer Support Group, Lenoir Memorial Hospital Bosom Buddies Cancer Support Group, and she retired from Lenoir County Farm Bureau following 27 years of service.
In addition to her parents, Kaye was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Edward F. Gray Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 14 years, Danny Gray of the home; daughters, Suzanne Deaver and husband, Glenn, of Kinston and Joy Brock and husband, Grady, of Seven Springs; three grandchildren, Austin and Mason Deaver of Kinston and Kalyn Brock of Seven Springs; mother-in-law, Annette Gray of LaGrange; three step-children, Ashley Gray and wife, Lauren, of LaGrange, Lindsey Gray of Chappell Hill, Texas, and Keely Gray of Greenville; sister, Janet Smith and husband, Dennis, of Kinston; nephew, Brian Smith and wife, Brittany, of Kinston; niece, Holly Smith of Kinston; sister-in-law, Lynn Everett and husband, Roy, of New Bern; brother-in-law, Donald Gray and wife, Judy, of LaGrange; sister-in-law, Luanne Scott and husband, Eddie, of Goldsboro; numerous nieces, nephews and other special friends and family; sister, Jean Rouse of Albertson; and brother, Russell Vinson of LaGrange.

Betty Faulk
Betty Lou Underhill Faulk, 68, of Southern Pines died on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Page Memorial United Methodist Church in Aberdeen with Rev. Ken Davenport officiating.
Born on March 19, 1940 in Duplin Co. to the late David Elwood Underhill and Sallie Christine Williamson Underhill.
Ms. Faulk was an active member of Page Memorial United Methodist Church in Aberdeen where she was very involved with the Food Pantry. She retired in 1996 from C.P. & L. Electric Company. She was a member of the Moore County Republican Party. She was also an active member of the “Le Femme Rouge” Red Hat Society in Moore County.
She is survived by her son, Robert Faulk and wife Kelley of Stafford, VA. One daughter, Susan Sweitzer and husband Patrick of Monroe, Ga. Two brothers: David Underhill and wife Nancy of Mt. Olive and James Underhill also of Mt. Olive. One sister, Iris Pate and husband Donald of Mt. Olive. She is also survived by one grandson, Samuel Sweitzer.
The family received friends on Tuesday, June 24 from 6-8 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

Joanne B. Joyner
JoAnne Baker Joyner, 54, of Goldsboro, died Thursday, June 12 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
JoAnne was born in Chicopee, Mass. on August 14, 1953. She had been a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward and Woolworth Department Store. She was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The funeral was Monday, June 16 at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Ordelt officiating. Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park.
She is survived by her mother, Ann P. Baker; her daughter, Melissa Joyner Koos and husband, Eric, of New Bern; her sisters, Kay B. Scheetz of Hampton, Va. and Beth B. Gettle of Goldsboro; her brother, Robert Owen Baker and wife, Karen, of Mount Olive; her grandson, Joseph Ryan Koos; her nieces and nephews, Sara Baker, Alison Baker, Meredith Baker, Lukas Baker, Kelly Gettle and Brett Gettle.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Edwin Baker.

William A. Pickett
Mr. William Andrew Pickett, 31, of Kenansville, died Sunday, June 15, 2008.
Funeral services were held at the Rose Hill Funeral Home Chapel, on Friday June 20, 2008 at 2 p.m. Rev. Ronald Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Moore Family Cemetery, Kenansville.
Mr. Pickett is survived by two sons: Deon McClain, Kenansville and William Pickett, Deep Run; one daughter: Monique McLamb, Beulaville; his parents: Mary Pickett Mayhew (Blaine), Kenansville and Isaiah Freeman, Goldsboro; one brother: Isaiah Freeman III, Pink Hill; one sister: Monique Hamilton (Robert), Albertson; a host of aunts, uncles, two nieces, three nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Family received friends on Thursday June 19, 2008 from 6 to 7 pm, at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 472 Wells Town Road, Rose Hill.
W. Thomas Rowe
William Thomas Rowe, 50, of Dudley, died Saturday, June 14 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Hickory.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18, at 10 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with Pastor Al Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park.
Born in Wayne County on July 28, 1957, he was the son of the late Rev. Rudolph and Irma Barwick Rowe.
He was employed with Shepherd Electric Supply Co. He attended Goldsboro Wesleyan Church and was active with livestock and Wayne County 4-H.
Mr. Rowe is survived by his wife, Vivian Lindsey Rowe; a daughter, Elizabeth Rowe of the home; two sisters, Mary Rowe Gardner and husband, Kenneth, of Pikeville, Lynne Rowe Herndon and husband, Tommy, of Pikeville; and his step mother, Hazel Rowe of Pikeville.

James W. Sutton
James Willie Sutton, 62, died on Sunday, June 8 at Britthaven of Goldsboro.
He was born in Warsaw on January 30, 1946, the son of the late Jonah Lee Sutton and Carrie Mae Best Sutton.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), 700 W. Ash St. Bishop Alton A. Smith officiated. Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park North on Old Grantham Road.
Mr. Sutton was the proud owner of J&M Enterprises for several years, and he retired as survey party chief with the city of Goldsboro Engineering Department for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Brown Sutton of the home; a daughter, Candace Maureen Sutton of Atlanta, Ga., sisters, Edith Hill of Faison, Daisy Williams (Willie) of Warsaw, Carrie Sutton of Washington D.C., Dessie Bell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Helen Carlton (Avon) of Rocky Point; and brothers, Reginald Sutton (Gladys) of Warsaw and Jonah Lee Sutton Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.
