Mount Olive gets $10,000 tax windfall
26 June 2008 – By William Holloman, staff writer
Preliminary indications show that the monthly sales tax revenue that will be funneled to the Town of Mount Olive by state officials is going to be up about $10,000.
Town Manager Charles Brown said he has been notified the monthly revenue check the Town will receive next month will total about $60,000.
The previous month total, he said, was $50,000.
The money expected to be received is actually from February retail sales in Wayne County.
He said the increase could reflect a trend that people are having to spend more and the fact that Wayne County has three Wal-Mart Stores is a certain impact on the amount returned to counties.
“The way things are right now I think people are being forced to shop where they can get the most for their money,” Brown explained.
He said if the increase continues it will be somewhat of a blessing for Mount Olive.
It is revenue that goes into the Town’s general fund.
“Right now, I just know what it all means. I don’t know if it is a blip on the screen or a trend, but it is pretty apparent that people are shopping at places where they feel they can get more for their dollar,” Brown explained.
“All I can say for sure is that for the month of February sales, an amount we will receive next month, the revenue is up much higher than we anticipated,” he added.
He said it will take more monthly sales figures before anyone can determine if an increase in monthly revenue is going to be the trend.
“It would certainly be nice for us if that is what we are going to continue to see,” Brown said.
He did say that revenue from sales tax usually hovers around the $50,000 a month mark for Mount Olive.
“We are glad to all of a sudden get $60,000,” he said.
