DCSO reports cases of gun theft, arson in Mount Olive, Faison area
26 June 2008 – By John Cate, staff writer
The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office reported a handful of incidents in the Tribune coverage area during late May, with a house break-in involving the theft of two weapons and a case of arson among the most serious crimes reported.
On Friday, May 16, Linda G. Smith of 336 John Lewis Grady Rd. reported that two firearms and two pieces of power equipment had been stolen from her home, but had no idea when the theft might have taken place.
Reported stolen were a Marlin .30-30 rifle valued at $550, a Browning .308 rifle valued at $800, a plasma cutter valued at $900 and a gas-powered air compressor valued at $800. Ms. Smith reported that the items were last known to be secure on Jan. 15. She was able to provide the DCSO with serial numbers for both of the stolen weapons.
Detective Randy Forster responded to the complaint and the case is under investigation.
On Saturday, May 24, Deputy Jerry Griffin responded to an apparent case of arson at 367 Oak Ridge Ave. Dwight Hill of 117 Buck Hill Rd. reported that someone had attempted to burn the house located on Oak Ridge Ave., but succeeded only in damaging a bedroom and the living room.
Damage was estimated at $4,000. The case is under investigation.
A day after the Beautancus Country Club’s clubhouse had been broken into, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the club’s private pond area after hours.
Deputy Donald Gregory of the DCSO responded to the call on Thursday, May 22, around noon. The premises were last known to be secure around 6 p.m. the previous night. Trespassing and forcible entry were reported, but no damage to private property was noted. The case is under investigation.
On Saturday, May 17, Angelica Montalva of 418 S. Center St., Faison, reported that an unknown suspect had taken items left out in the open by her 14-year-old son and burned items of clothing that accompanied them. Two items of gold jewelry, a necklace valued at $50 and a belt buckle valued at $10, were reported stolen, along with $25 in cash and a pair of blue jeans valued at $50.
Deputy Joseph Kennedy responded to the call. The case is under investigation.
