Obituaries - 19 June 2008

Matilda L. Oates
Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Liborio Oates were held on Saturday, June l4, at 3 p.m. by the graveside in the Oates Family Cemetery at Suttontown, with the Rev. Michelle Clark officiating.  Friends and family were received at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive on Friday, June 13, from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
Mrs. Oates, a 94-year-old resident of 108 South Hill Street in Faison, died Wednesday night, June 11, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
She was the youngest of eleven children born to her late parents, Stephan and Theresa Tamborine Liborio.  She was the widow of Mitchell Oates and was a member of Faison United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael Oates of the home in Faison; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Gordon Lancaster of Sunset, S.C.; and a grandson, Mitchell Cleveland “Cleve” Lancaster and his wife, Beth, of Houston, Texas.
Memorials may be made to Faison Methodist Church, PO Box 417, Faison, NC 28341, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
 
Robin E. Strickland
Robin E. “Bird” Strickland, 51, of 107 Price Street, Mount Olive died Wednesday afternoon, June 11, at his home.Strickland
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Kelly Strickland; a son, Ryan Strickland of Goldsboro; three daughters, Christy Meador and husband, Mike, of Goldsboro, Kelly Sutton and husband, Bobby, of La Grange, and Dallas Strickland of the home; a step-son, Eric Tyndall and wife, Margaret, of Goldsboro; two step-daughters, Dawn McCullen and husband, Chad, of Mount Olive, and Kelly Kornegay and husband, Chad, of Greenville; a brother, Dennis Earl Strickland and wife, Susan, of Fremont; ten grandchildren; a nephew, Daniel Strickland of Fremont, and a niece, Cindy Sasser of Colorado.
A service to celebrate his life was held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the Tyndall Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Clayton Sutton officiating, and with visitation following.

Benjamin F. Murphy Sr.
Mr. Benjamin Franklin Murphy Sr., age 70, of Rose Hill, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the home.
Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist Church, Rose Hill, on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 3 p.m. Rev. W.K. Raynor, officiating.  Burial will follow at Maxwell Cemetery, Rose Hill.
He is survived by eight sons: Larry Watkins, Rose Hill, Connie Watkins (Gisela) Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, James Murphy (Karin) Fayetteville, George Murphy, Kenansville, Jonathan Murphy, Rose Hill, Curtis Murphy (Kesha), Rose Hill, Jeffery Murphy (Tonya), Fayetteville, and Benjamin Murphy, Jr. (Pam), Kenansville; four daughters: Linda Murphy, Teachey, Trina Murphy, Wallace, Doris Smith (Victor), Warsaw, and Brenda Crawford (Robert), Kenansville; Special granddaughter: Barbara Murphy, Rose Hill; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; one sister: Perlene Rogers (Frank), Philadelphia, PA; four aunts: Tempye Mainor, Jacksonville, Edna Farmer (Walter), Fayetteville, Resse Murphy, Greensboro; two sisters-in-law: Retha Mae Murphy, Rose Hill, and Rosetta Murphy, Greensboro, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Family received friends on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 472 Wells Town Road, Rose Hill.

Rev. Joseph Sturdevant
Rev. Joseph Sturdevant, 69, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville.
Funeral services were held from the Rockfish AME Church, 167 Cornwallis Road, Teachey, on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 3 p.m. Elder Evelyn Dunn officiating. Burial followed at Duplin Memorial Gardens, Teachey.
His survivors include his wife: Martha S. Sturdevant, Fayetteville; four sons: Reynaldo Sturdevant, Fayetteville, Troy Sturdevant (Chevy), Monroe, James Peterson, New York City, NY and Steven Peterson, Fort Washington, MD; four daughters: Joann Smith, Cleveland Ohio, Lillian P. Little (Jerry), Spring Valley, NY, Peggy McKoy, Atlanta, GA and Barbara Smalls, Appleton, WI; one sister: Yvonne Duke, Anniston, AL; twenty-three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A visitation of family and friends was held on Friday, June 20, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 472 Wells Town Road, Rose Hill. 

Darlene B. Grantham
Darlene Brock Grantham, 56, of 1226 Beautancus Road, Mount Olive, in the Beautancus community, died Monday morning, June 16, 2008, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. After her battle with cancer, she is now rejoicing with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Tyndall Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Goodman officiating. Visitation immediately followed the service at the funeral home, and at other times, the family will receive friends at home. The burial service was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at Wayne Memorial Park.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Garry L. Grantham of the home; her parents, Jasper and Nedje S. Brock of Mount Olive; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Regina Grantham of Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Craig Davis of Dudley; two grandchildren, Nathan Grantham and Eva Kate Davis; a brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Susan Brock of Goldsboro; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Melba Brock of Mount Olive, and Janet and Charley Pippin of LaGrange.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to American Cancer Society, 930 Wellness Drive, Suite B, Greenville, NC 27834, or Gideons International, Goldsboro South Camp, PO Box 509, Goldsboro, NC 27533.

Ieasha Louise Teachey
Ms. Ieasha Louise Teachey, 27, of the Deep Bottom Community, died Sunday, June 8, 2008.
Funeral services were held from the Rose Hill Funeral Home Chapel, Rose Hill, on Saturday, June 14 at 11 a.m. Rev. Acie Robinson officiating. Burial followed at the Pickett Family Cemetery, Wallace.
She leaves to cherish her memories her parents: Rachel Diane Teachey and Andrew J. Teachey, Rockville Center, NY; two brothers: Maurice Teachey (Thomasina), Greensboro, NC and Andrew J. Teachey, Jr., New York, NY; two sisters: Fatima Flowers, Korea and Keonya Matthews, Burgaw, NC; maternal grandparents: J.C. and Louise Pickett, Wallace; paternal Grandparents: Andrew Teachey (Catherine) Wallace, and Lila Teachey, Wallace; one niece, nine nephews, a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
Family will receive friends at the home of her grandfather, Andrew Teachey, 109 Stokestown Road, Wallace, NC 28466.

Dalton C. Wallace
Dalton Chase Wallace, 10, of Goldsboro, died Thursday, June 12 at Duke University Medical Center.
Born in Wayne County on December 2, 1997, he was the son of Randy and Stephanie Wallace. He was a student at Rosewood Elementary School, a member of the Highest Praise Tabernacle Church and was a member of the Royal Rangers at church. He was a member of the WallaceCarolina Fury, where he played power wheelchair hockey. He was also an Honorary Marine at Cherry Point Air Station.
A service to celebrate Dalton’s life was held Monday, June 16, at 7 p.m. at the Highest Praise Tabernacle Church with Dr. Glenn Mills officiating.
In addition to his parents, Randy and Stephanie, Dalton is survived by a sister, Zhoie Wallace of the home; a brother, Kamdin Wallace of the home; his maternal grandparents, Peggy and Scott Barry of Calypso, John and Davette Toppings of Aynor, S.C.; his paternal grandparents, Julia Pate of Goldsboro, David Wallace of Goldsboro; his maternal great grandparents, Bob and Lisalotta Toppings of Aynor, S.C., and Karen Porter of Rolla, Mo.; his paternal great-grandparents, Arthur Lee and Adelle Wallace of Goldsboro.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Dalton Wallace Memorial Fund, c/o Broadcasting Hope, 2581 U.S. Hwy. 70 W., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.

Edward E. Stevens
Edward E. Stevens of New York, N.Y., formerly of Mount Olive, died Saturday, June 7 at Jacobi Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
The funeral was held Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Jerusalem Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Jimmy and Joyce Stevens, 605 S. Breazeale Ave., Mount Olive.

Emily L. Branch
Emily L. Branch, 62, of Mount Olive, died Sunday, June 15 at her residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by Garris Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the home of O’Neal M. Branch Sr., 148 Joe Branch Road, Mount Olive.

Craig L. Darden
Craig LaShawn Darden, 30, of Mount Olive, died Sunday, June 8.
The funeral was held Saturday, June 14 at noon at Greater Six Run Baptist Church in Turkey, with the Rev. Edward McPhail officiating. Burial followed in the Cobbs Cemetery.
He was the son of Dora Stevens Darden of Mount Olive and Jerry Lee Darden of Newton Grove.
