Duplin County approves budget

19 June 2008 – The Duplin County Board of Commissioners ended an acrimonious battle over the 2008-09 operating budget Monday night, approving by a 5-1 vote a budget that redcued funding for schools, but avoided a tax increase and appropriated more than $3.3 million from the county’s fund balance.
The lone dissenting vote was cast by Commisioner L.S. Guy, who described the budget as ‘tainted’.
The budget retains the current tax rate of $0.79 per $100 valuation, but accomplished this only by taking $3,342,728 from reserve funds. Another controversial move was a $420,117 in the county school budget, including $295,984 in restricted funds which were cut at a worksession last week.
The board also declined to implement the findings of a study presented to them on employee pay, which had cost $80,000 to conduct.
