Calypso seeking ways to improve town's drainage
19 June 2008 – By Barry Merrill, Tribune publisher
Calypso has commissioned a study on improving the town’s drainage.
Steve Blanchard of Jim Blanchard and Associates made a presentation to the town board at their June 2 meeting on a preliminary study he had prepared for the town. He noted three areas, draining the south side to Dick’s Branch, the north side taking the water out to the west, and improving some drainage that had been addressed on a recent block grant in the east side of town.
He noted he would prepare, at the town’s direction, some or all of the projects, according to their priorities, or all could be assessed with projections for costs and the town could address them as they wanted or could afford.
After some initial reluctance, and a request by Mayor Dick Lewis to wait on the billing until the town got into the new budget year, the board approved going ahead and starting the study, though work would be addressed in sections as the budget would allow. The board indicated they would likely do all of the work, and asked that he complete the study on all sections of town.
Mr. Blanchard said that there was a July 1 grant submission deadline approaching, but there was no possibility of him being able to meet that deadline. The next deadline would be January 1, and he would be prepared well in advance of that date for submission.
The board recommended a 5% increase for Town Clerk Loretta Lanier.
The board approved an increase in mileage rates to 50 ½ cents per mile, effective June 5.
There was some discussion of sewer taps that were put in the wrong location. The board agreed to contact the contractor about getting those moved. Mrs. Lanier reported 68 properties are not hooked up to the sewer line, in violation of their sewer grant.
The board agreed to re-advertise the public works position, including a wage of $14/hour, with a July 15th deadline for application. The previous advertisements failed to attract a qualified candidate.
Several projects were pushed to the new budget year.
