Duplin County under burning ban
19 June 2008 – The N.C. Division of Forest Resources has initiated a ban on open burning and canceled burning permits for Duplin and five other counties. The burning ban became effective at noon Friday and remain in effect until further notice.
Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was issued.
The ban on open burning is necessary because a lack of adequate rainfall
coupled with high temperatures has dried forest fuels in the
southeastern part of the state and increased the potential for wildfire
activity.
Officials say a burn ban should reduce wildfire activity and help
minimize additional demands placed on firefighting resources. Many of
those firefighting resources are being used to fight the 39,779-acre
Evans Road fire near the Outer Banks and several manmade fires in
southeastern North Carolina.
