Planned runway extension at local airport close to becoming reality
12 June 2008 – By William Holloman, staff writer
It is still weeks away before any work is expected on extending the runway at the Mount Olive Municipal Airport, but officials say it can all get off the ground when a final appraisal on needed land is obtained.
Extension of the runway from its current 3,700 feet to 5,000 feet to accommodate small jet aircraft requires the acquisition of an additional 12 acres to the south of the current runway.
The needed two tracts have already been surveyed.
Mount Olive Town Manager Charles Brown said both land owners have been cooperative.
He said once the needed property is appraised it will clear the way for officials to negotiate a price.
“The property owners have been very cooperative, and are supportive of the Town’s effort to expand the runway,” said Brown.
He said the airport currently has about $600,000 for the entire project, including land acquisition and construction expenses.
Once the land is obtained, Brown said engineering plans can be finalized and the project can be put up for bid.
The Town Manager also said the airport committee is also currently studying making jet fuel accessible.
He said it will cost about $50,000 to make the addition, and a number of requests for jet fuel have already been made.
He said all the airport would have to do is sign a contract with a fuel provider.
There have also been requests made for additional hangars.
Such requests are typically handled by leasing the needed space and allowing the renter to build his own aircraft hangar.
He said on a long-term lease basis, this would result in a substantial amount of additional revenue.
