Kenneth W. Goodson
MOUNT OLIVE -- Kenneth Wayland Goodson, 87, died Tuesday morning, June 3, at home at 291 Cricket Ridge Road, Mount Olive.
A native of the Garner’s Chapel community, he was the son of the late Paul Ballard Goodson and Erma Waters Goodson. He was a proud graduate of N. C. State University where he earned a degree in aerospace engineering. He volunteered for service during World War II in the Army Air Corps but was assigned to aircraft production for the war effort. After the War, he joined NACA which was the forerunner for NASA where he remained employed until retirement in 1973. He was an aeronautical engineer and one of his notable achievements was project manager for the BellX-Z rocket powered aircraft. After retirement, he was an avid gardener who joyfully shared his bounty with the community.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive where he was a past deacon, a member of the Loyal Soldiers Bible Class, the Baptist Men’s Club,the J.O.Y. Singers, and had served on various church committees. Also he was a member of the Mount Olive Rotary Club.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Goodson was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Rice Goodson; a brother, A. Bernard Goodson; and several infant siblings, and he is survived by his wife, Erma Mae Amon Faulk Goodson of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Paula Goodson of Wake Forest, and Dr. Larry and Tomasa Goodson of Boiling Springs, Pa.; four grandchildren, Savannah and Taylor Goodson of Wake Forest, and Alexandra and Jonathan Goodson of Boiling Springs, Pa.; a sister and brother-in-law, Isabelle G. and Bill Mallory of Mount Olive; a sister-in-law, Nancy S. Goodson of Kinston; two step sons and daughters-in-law, Robert S. and Janice Faulk of Fayetteville, and Wayne E. and Ellen Faulk of Snellville, Ga. and two special care-givers, Ernestine Whitfield and Vera Sutton.
A service to celebrate Mr. Goodson’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, at the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, with Dr. Dennis Atwood and the Rev. A. Z. Gurganus officiating. Interment followed in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation was at Tyndall Funeral Home on Thursday, June 5, from 6:30 until 8 p.m., and at the residence at other times. Jewell S. Odom
Jewell Sutton Odom, 101, of 100 Perry Drive, Goldsboro, died Tuesday, June 3, at SunBridge Care Center in Mount Olive.
She was a long time resident of the Dobbersville community west of Mount Olive, and was the daughter of the late Julius and Fereba Jordan Sutton, and the widow of Clarence Avery Odom. She was a charter member of Brownings United Methodist Church where she had been the oldest living member.
Known by most as either “Mother Jewell,” “Mama, “ “Grandmama Jewell,” or “Aunt Jewell,” she is survived by her loving family which includes a daughter and son-in-law, Jean O. and Al Stroud, with whom she had made her home; six grandchildren, Belinda Alligood, Jeanette Sutton, Steven Stroud, Garry Padgett, Barry Padgett, and DeVanuia “Dee” Bryan; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara O. and Bearl Vick, along with all her siblings.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 6, at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. The Rev. Patrick Muston officiated, and burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home during the hour before the service, and at other times, at the Stroud residence at 100 Perry Drive, Goldsboro.
Marjorie P. Garris
Marjorie Pridgen Garris, 70, of 1442 Old Mount Olive Highway, Dudley, died Wednesday morning, June 4, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, from the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, with Dr. Dennis Atwood officiating. Interment was in the John Pridgen Family Cemetery at the family homeplace at Beautancus.
Mrs. Garris was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive where she was currently serving as deacon and was an active participant in the church’s Relay for Life efforts. She had been a Sunday school teacher for the third and fourth graders for more than 18 years. Also, she was a retired substitute school teacher in the Wayne County Schools, primarily at Southern Wayne High School. She had been a constant companion in her husband’s military career as duty called them to numerous appointments.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. William Gerald Garris of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Gary Hughston of Augusta, Ga., Rose and Ricky Beasley of Mount Olive, and Sallie and Ralph Fiore of Garner; a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Jenny Garris of Goldsboro; seven grandchildren, Lee Beasley, Brandon Beasley, Kelly Beasley, Jake Garris, Cody Garris, Hunter Fiore, and River Fiore; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Norma and Bob Smith of Baltimore, MD, Nancy (Mrs. Bud) Holzworth of New Bern, Mary Linda and Tom Sutton of St. Albans, WV, Betty Sue and the Rev. Paul Rose of Mount Olive, Brenda and Ken Williams of Rochester, NY, and Judy and Bill Kelly of Raleigh; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, William Harper and Marcia Pridgen of Spring Hill, Fl., Charles and Jo Pridgen of Mount Olive, David Pridgen of Utah, and Clark Pridgen of Mount Olive; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at Tyndall Funeral Home on Friday evening, June 6, from 7 until 9 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

Jerry Thomas Cooper
Jerry Thomas Copper, Jr., age 66, of Brooklyn, NY, died Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Beth Israel Hospital Hospice Unity, New York, NY.
Funeral services were held from the First Missionary Baptist Church, 243 N. Church Street, Kenansville on Saturday June 7, 2008 at 2 p.m. Rev. V.L. Wilson officiating. Burial followed at the Dobson Family Cemetery, Magnolia.
He is survived by his wife, Pinkey Copper, of the home; one son: Kevin Copper (Darlene); one grandson: Markeith D. Copper, all of NY; three aunts: Annie B. Gibbs and Melvinia Gibbs Howard, both of New Bern, and Beatrice Miller Gibbs, SC; one uncle: Lennon Gibbs, New Bern; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Family received friends on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral at the First Missionary Baptist Church, Kenansville.
Marcus Lamond Moore
Marcus Lamond Moore, age 35, a Greenevers native, died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Duplin General Hospital, Kenansville.
Funeral services were held from the Rose Hill Funeral Home Chapel, 472 Wells Town Road, Rose Hill on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 3 p.m. Rev. Johnny Whichard officiating. Burial followed at the Farrior Cemetery, Rose Hill.
He is survived by his wife, Latanya Moore, Beulaville; four daughters: Dayona Dudley, Da‘Quana Dudley, KaDeja Dudley and Nyirah Dudley, all of Beulaville; parents: Lacy Moore, Jr., Kenansville, and Lillian A. Moore, Rose Hill; four brothers: Lacy Moore, III., Wallace, Corey J. Moore, Rose Hill, Sherman Miller, Clinton and Tony Chasten, Rose Hill: paternal grandfather: Lacy Moore, Sr. (Margurite), Kenansville; father-in-law: Charles L. Pickett, South Carolina; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A visitation of family and friends was held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 6 to 7 pm at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 472 Wells Town Road, Rose Hill.
James W. Flowers
James Washington Flowers, 86, of Stuart, Virginia, died on Sunday, June 1.
A native of Mount Olive, he was born on February 22, 1922 to the late John William and Mary Reaves Flowers. He was a graduate of Mount Olive High School and began a career in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot in World War II. He continued his military career for 33 years and fought in three wars. He received various medals and honors and retired in 1975 as a regular lieutenant colonel .
In addition to his parents, Mr. Flowers was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Flowers Kice; two sisters, Nancy Flowers Grantham and Lucille Flowers Thigpen, and by two brothers, John William Flowers, Jr. and Don Carlos Flowers.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Flowers; a son and daughter-in-law, Stan Flowers and Dr. Jeanne Flowers of Stuart, Va.; a granddaughter, Stacy Flowers Martin of Stuart; three grandson, Darian Flowers of Raleigh, James Kice of Reno, Nevada, and PFC Peter Kice of Camp Pendleton, CA; two great granddaughters and three great grandsons.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m. at the Flowers-Parker Cemetery west of Mount Olive.

Victor “Bill” Pipkin
Victor G. “Bill” Pipkin, 80, of Goldsboro died Friday, June 6 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center following a lengthy illness.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, June 10 at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. The Revs. Tom Dorman and Willard Hardison officiated.
Mr. Pipkin was born on November 29, 1927, to the late Lois and Ethel Pipkin. He was a carpenter until he retired.
He is survived by four sons; Rodney Pipkin and his wife, Barbara, of Pikeville, Ronnie Pipkin of Kenly, Johnny Pipkin of the home, Donnie Pipkin and Lynn Crow, of Goldsboro; two daughters, Brenda Carter and her husband, Douglas, of Dudley and Darlene Stafford and her husband, Joseph, of Goldsboro; three brothers, Mark Pipkin, Edgar Pipkin, and Clifton Pipkin; sister, Lois Edwards of Bethel, and Mary Pierce; five grandchildren, Richard Carter, Kira Pipkin, Amy Capps, Ronnie Pipkin Jr., and Rodney Pipkin Jr., and one great-grandchild, Alex Carter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wesley Pipkin, Needham Pipkin, and Jimmy Pipkin; and a sister, Agnes Melvin.

Vernia M. Wallace
Vernia Mae Wallace, 94, of Sunbridge Care in Mount Olive, formerly of Goldsboro, died Tuesday, June 3 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Nora Smith
Nora Faircloth Smith, 98, died Friday, June 6 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Born May 25, 1910 to the late John Henry and Claire Dudley of Wayne County, she was the oldest of six siblings. She married Charlie Frank Faircloth, who was a lieutenant with Goldsboro Police Department and was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 19, 1960.
Mrs. Smith retired from General Electric. She volunteered with Wayne Memorial Hospital and attended Jefferson United Methodist Church in Goldsboro.
On Dec. 7, 1971, she married local farmer Gurney Lee Smith, who died Nov. 15, 1993.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her five siblings. She is survived by her six children, Edmond and Pauline Faircloth of Goldsboro, D.J. and Margaret Faircloth of McDonough, Georgia, Marvin and Colleen Faircloth Waters of Goldsboro, Leon and Kathleen Faircloth Mitchell of Goldsboro, Robert and Lorraine Faircloth Jennette of Goldsboro, and Sharon Faircloth Martin of Goldsboro. She lives on in the lives of 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
The funeral was held on Sunday, June 8 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro with the Rev. Doug Johnson and Dr. Richard A. Glosson officiating. A graveside service was held at Pineview Cemetery on Hwy. 111 in Seven Springs on Monday, June 9 at 3 p.m.

James Thomas Williams, 57, of Goldsboro, died May 31 at New Hanover Medical Center.

Daisy Quince, 106, of Mount Olive, died Monday, June 2 in Sunbridge Care.
The funeral was held Saturday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Church with the Rev. Terry Armstrong officiating. Burial followed in the Wynn Cemetery.
Naomi Redmond
Naomi Redmond, 91, of Goldsboro, died Thursday, May 29 at her residence.
The funeral was held Wednesday, June 4 at noon at Goldsboro Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial was in Wayne Memorial Park.
She was the daughter of the late Gussie Lee Hobbs.
She is survived by seven children, Ruth Higgins (Freddie), Wiley Mozingo (Alice) of Dudley, Steve Mozingo (Theresa) of Chapel Hill, Edward Mozingo of Ohio, Dwight Mozingo (Annette), Ricky Mozingo and Shirlyn Mozingo (John) of California; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lawrence Simmons
Lawrence “Larry” Simmons, 65, died May 31 in Washington, D.C.
He was born July 18, 1942, in Dudley to Mary Simmons Aldridge and the late Ellie Simmons Sr.
The funeral was held Saturday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Simmons Aldridge; five sisters, Delores Lorease Johnson, Andra Barbara Aldridge, Veronica V. Fennell (Ralph), Glenda Bryant (Carl) and Consuela Baker (Horace); four brothers, Ellie Simmons Jr., Elmer Simmons, Edward C. Simmons (Margaret), and Attorney James Aldridge Jr. (Irene); an uncle, Willie Russell Southerland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.

Luvenia Bryant
Luvenia Bryant, 77, of Mount Olive, died Sunday, June 8 at SunBridge Nursing Center.

Clara Mae Collins
Clara Mae Collins, 61, of Mount Olive, died May 30 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 7 at noon at Daisy Chapel Baptist Church of Beulaville, with Dr. Curtis Lee officiating. Burial followed in the Daisy Chapel Cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late Gordon and Katie Parker Dobson.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis F. Collins, and two children.

Patricia K. Huey
Patricia K. Huey, 75, of Goldsboro, died Wednesday, June 4 at home.
A graveside service was held Monday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. The Revs. Richard Park and William Painter officiated.
Ms. Huey was born on September 15, 1932 in the Republic of Korea to the late Tae Kun and Jin Duk Kim.
She is survived by two daughters; Kim Hyde of Goldsboro, and Denise Calleja of Florida; a sister, Chong Skiles of Dudley, and a host of brothers in Korea; five grandchildren, Brandy Edwards, Daniel Carter, Mack Carter III, all of Wayne County; one grandchild in Pennsylvania, and one grandchild in Arizona.

Angela S. Massey
Angela Sherrod Massey, 51, of Durham, formerly of Mount Olive, died Wednesday, June 4 at Duke University Hospital.
She was the daughter of Celestine Armwood Sherrod and the late Ira Lee Sherrod. Her husband, Stanley Massey, and one child also survive.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at Burning Bush Holy Church in Faison. Burial followed at Hodges Armwood Family Cemetery.
Gordon M. Price Jr.
Gordon McRoy Price Jr., 77, of Durham, died Thursday morning, June 5, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A memorial service was held Saturday, June 7 at Parkwood Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Officiating was the Rev. Marty Mangum. Burial was Saturday afternoon, June 7, at 4 p.m. in Pineview Cemetery in LaGrange, with the Rev. Phillip Garrett officiating.
Mr. Price was born and raised in Seven Springs. He attended the Seven Springs public schools and graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
He was employed as a financial analyst with IBM for 20 years, retiring in 1986. He served his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
Mr. Price is survived by his wife, Ida Garren Price of the home; sons, David Price and his wife, Karen, of London, England; Gary Price and his wife, Lisa, of Durham; grandson, Aidan Price; step-grandchildren, Tori, Ashley, Casey and Ali; and a brother, C.C. Price and his wife, Ann, of Seven Springs.
