Town ponders allowing golf carts on streets

12 June 2008 – By William Holloman, staff writer

There is a possibility, just a possibility that folks in Mount Olive can use golf carts to ride around and take care of business without having to use high dollar gas.

Currently, State law prohibits use of golf carts without the usual licensed motor vehicle restrictions, but a small municipality in Northern Wayne County and another in Southern Duplin have passed local laws that allows the use of a golf cart on town streets.

They are legal in Fremont and in Faison.

Mount Olive Town Manager Charles Brown raised the issue at the regular June meeting of town commissioners last week, but asked for no action.

However, he says it is something that needs to be reviewed a little closer as part of the town’s responsibility in providing services to its citizens.

Right now, golf carts are prohibited on town streets.

But, it is apparently working in Fremont and in Faison, but there are still guidelines and the usual red tape before all is well.

Brown told the Tribune it is an issue that is worth looking into, and said he intends to discuss the details of the local regulations with officials in both Fremont and in Fain.

He said folks in Mount Olive who might be interested in using a golf cart and meeting all the regulations that will come with it should discuss it with their commissioner.

“I just feel like I have an obligation to look into it, and there have been several people who have inquired about it,” Brown said.

He did make it clear that it is an issue that will not mean youngsters can start driving a golf cart on town streets.

It is illegal and will continue to be illegal, he said.

If were to come to an issue that got approval from town commissioners it would still mean that local law cannot override state law.

State law prohibits the use of golf carts unless they are completely certified, licensed, registered, and insured just as any motor vehicle.

An approval of golf cart use in Mount Olive, according to Brown, would still mean that the vehicles, unless all state requirements are met, could not be used on state streets.

Mount Olive has several, including Breazeale, Main, and portions of Church Street.

Brown said the with price of gas as it is and apparently not about to decline, he feels it to be the town’s responsibility to help its residents in any way possible.

He said if residents send out a message to town officials that the use of golf carts in certain situations is something they would like then it is an issue he will put up to the board for further review.
